Join the ADOAA Fall Fundraiser on October 22!

The Autosomal Dominant Optic Atrophy (ADOA) Association is hosting our “Boots, S’mores

and More” Fall Fundraiser on October 22 at a local family farm in Glen Allen, Virginia! Join us from 3:00PM to 6:30pm to hear our family’s story, learn more about ADOA, and participate in a silent auction. The fundraiser will also feature live music, great BBQ, and games for the kids!

Our goal is to raise a minimum of $50,000 at this event to help fund ongoing ADOA research at the University at Buffalo.

The event will be hosted by Claudia Matheny, the ADOA Association’s volunteer Director of

Fundraising. Claudia’s daughter, Sophia, is a 10th grader at Tucker High School in Richmond,

Virginia who was diagnosed with ADOA at age seven. Her diagnosis came after years of

difficulty reading the blackboard, tripping at school, and several doctors’ visits. Her optic nerve has deteriorated over 30% since her diagnosis, and the progression of the decline is still unknown.

The ADOA Association was formed 10 years ago by Lindsey and Adam Allen when their 3-

year-old daughter was diagnosed with ADOA. Like the Matheny’s, they also had no choice but to fight a lifelong battle with this rare, genetic disease that causes optic nerve deterioration in children under the age of 10. Unfortunately no glasses, contacts, surgery, or other treatments can help restore any of the vision loss that these children endure. We need research to find treatments and ultimately a cure for ADOA. The Association is run by a group of volunteers and all of our fundraising proceeds go directly toward this critical research. Most recently, ADOAA was able to support the University at Buffalo in its research of ADOA with a $100K grant.
